  • Happy Freedman is an innovator and internationally recognized expert in the field of bike fit. Building on his over thirty years of experience working in bikefit and related fields, Happy has been instrumental in developing the first hospital-based clinical bike fit program within a motion lab in North America, during his long tenure at Hospital for Special Surgery. There and now, he collaborates with exercise physiologists, physical therapists, medical researchers, and physicians on a regular basis.

His passion for bike fit began as a keen cyclist determined to improve his pedal stroke efficiency. From there, he became a vocal advocate of bike fit with a particular professional interest in helping injured cyclists.

Happy's approach focuses on posture, breathing, and the use of antagonist muscles, and benefits riders at all levels, from professionals to recreational cyclists.

Happy works closely with the IBFI as a committee member and a   representative of the steering committee. In the US and Canada, he is recognised as an ambassador for the organisation, supporting other North America-based bike fit professionals.
His bike fit background includes all of the ‘big names’: he taught at the   Serotta School, has lectured at the CycleFit Symposium, London, Science in Cycling at the Grand Depart of the Tour de France, numerous events throughout the United States, and is a founding faculty member of the Medicine of Cycling Conference held annually at USA Cycling in Colorado.
In recent years, Happy has founded and spearheaded Bike Fit U at the Philadelphia Bike Expo, an annual 2-day peer-to-peer education program of workshops, panels, and discussions for bike fitters, physical therapists, and professionals in related fields.
Happy has taught master classes to fellow fitters in the US and UK.

In addition, Happy is an experienced cycling coach, including over ten successful years for Columbia University’s Division 1 Cycling Team, as well as having been a certified coach and official for the United States Cycling Federation.

Happy fits the cyclist first, then adapts the bike, to address the   individual needs of the rider and to develop an evidence-based protocol for bike fitting. Bikes, his website reminds us, are not ‘one size fits all’.

After years of working with advanced technology, he has more recently   embraced a revolutionary philosophy he calls “Bike Fit Unplugged” an approach   to bike fitting, driven by the rider's anatomy, medical history, cycling experience, and riding goals. Going beyond gadgets and software, bike fit unplugged redefines what a bike fit is, and in the process places the cyclist   in their best position yet. Happy frequently mentors other fitters from around the world to share his knowledge and experience.
